Shiprah yagiz
"Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten."
About
Shiprah was born in Aksom-Son, deep beneath the Black Shroud, to a fairly upper-class family. Her birth father, Lemuel, was a breeding male of the Night Guard, the city watch force; and her birth mother, Revin, a renowned alchemist and inventor, famed for creating a (non-fire) light source powered from natural energy and chemicals rather than magics.(Want to know more about Aksom-son? Fascinated instead by folklore and fairytales, Shiprah immersed herself in fantastical stories of knights in shining armor and handsome princes on white chocobos. Often chastised for neglecting her studies in favor of doodling princesses in towers and beasts who turned at true loves’ kiss, Shiprah’s head remained in the clouds as she grew up, much to her mother’s affectionate dismay. As a child Shiprah could frequently be found pestering the former surface dwelling denizens of Aksom-Son for their stories of the land above, becoming more starry-eyed with each mention of heroes of legend and adventurer stories.Praised for her artistic talent but scolded for her utter lack of interest in academia, Shiprah longed for a day when she became of age and was able to leave Aksom-Son and find her own Prince (or Princess!) Charming. On her twentieth birthday, Revin presented her with a new tome - One she could both sketch in and hone her spellcasting ability - and her blessing to visit the world above, as long as she promised to visit often (An easy promise to make, as despite her dreams Shiprah did love her home). After a period of shock once seeing the surface world for the first time - There was so much sky! Sometimes it snowed! Everything was so open! - Shiprah thoroughly explored Gridania, cataloguing anything interesting she found in her sketchbook.Upon her first sea journey to Limsa Lominsa (where her ship was attacked by a giant squid, very exciting, she made sure to sketch the event safely huddled belowdecks), she was thrilled to discover the existence of the Arcanist’s Guild, who were equally delighted to find someone from such an illustrious bastion of knowledge. Joining up and making friends with her new carbuncle and faerie companions, Shiprah continues to travel and write down any interesting stories or sketch any unique individuals she finds, hoping to someday write and illustrate her own compendium of folktales from all across Eorzea - And maybe find a whirlwind fairytale romance along the way...

Aksom-Son is a subterranean city deep beneath the Black Shroud, located somewhere in the northern parts of the swampy, foggy forest near Fallgourd Float. Named in the tongue of the ancient Gelmorrans that built the ruins that form the bones of the city, Aksom-Son is home to a surprisingly large clan of Keepers. Eschewing Keeper tradition of a small, nomadic hunting community, the denizens of Aksom-Son have put down roots in the ruins and refurbished the cavernous halls as their permanent residence. Led by the Hierophant (a position not passed through blood, where the successor is handpicked by the current Hierophant), the people of clan Aksom-Son are academics, researchers, archaeologists, and scientists first and foremost. Boasting a library exhaustive enough to rival even that of Sharlayan, the majority of the clanspeople devote themselves to studying the ancient civilizations of the Shroud and surrounding Eorzea and writing and cataloguing anything they find.Though still matriarchal, the typical expectations of gender roles placed upon Keeper society are less restrictive. Males are allowed to choose their own job until they come of age, at which point they will either join the breeding males of the clan or receive special dispensation from the Hierophant to remain a scholar - Typically receiving approval by presenting a thesis or rare find or experiment to the Council of Academicians. Men who are not attracted to women are exempt from breeding unless it is their own personal choice to involve themselves, and breeding males are allowed and encouraged to hold jobs, go to school, and lead otherwise normal lives. While Aksomites have only one true set of birth parents, they share their parents within the community. Their families are very large, consisting of multiple mothers and many siblings and cousins, and play an important role in their lives. A family composed of an individual, their parents, and their ten blood relation siblings is considered “average”.The people of Aksom-Son rarely leave the city outside of research journeys, but are not barred from doing so, and in theory may come and go at their own leisure despite this not occurring too often. As Aksomites typically keep to their own kind, few outsiders (barring any fellow scholars who the researchers keep in contact with) are aware of Aksom-Son’s existence. Outsiders who travel to Aksom-Son are welcomed to stay and enjoy the culture of the city, but must apply to the Council of Academicians for allowance to study within the libraries and view the artifacts. Despite Aksom-Son being a miq'ote settlement, a large number of Duskwight call the city home as well - Often they are refugees fleeing persecution from Gridania. Non-Aksomite native Keeper refugees are common to see as well, as well as an extremely small number (able to count on one hand, really) of Hyur and Lalafell that have made significant contributions to Aksom-Son society, and been granted permanent residence by the Hierophant.
